A 593-square-metre lakeside residence that refuses to show itself on approach — that's the premise of Promenade House, completed in 2025 by studio gm, led by architects Guto Delgado, Mylena Oliveira and Letícia Ferreira.
The house sits on the shores of a lake, wrapped by an extensive garden. You don't arrive at a facade. You arrive at a winding path that cuts through the vegetation, and the architecture appears only gradually as you walk.
That path is the whole idea. "The Promenade House is a residence conceived from the experience of traversing and discovering the landscape," the architects said. The name isn't decorative either: promenade refers directly to the act of walking and observing.
What does the path actually change?
Plenty. In most residential projects, circulation is a leftover — the corridor that connects the rooms. Here, studio gm inverts that logic. The path isn't mere circulation; it structures the entire arrival experience, delaying the reveal of the house until the visitor has already settled into the landscape around it.
The effect is a house that behaves like a sequence rather than an object. First vegetation, then the lake's edge, then fragments of the building, then the building itself. The garden does the framing.
The project team kept the material palette in-house with a roster of named manufacturers: Arkos, Carlos Motta, Cinex, Dell Anno, Jader Almeida and Polytec. Bernard Cunha handled the photography.
For a 2025 residential commission, Promenade House reads as a quiet argument that approach can carry as much design weight as the floor plan — and that a lakefront site deserves a slower look.
