The government has approved plans to replace Bradford Interchange with a new city centre railway station, setting up a major rebuild in the 2030s. Ministers picked the existing 1970s station site for the Northern Powerhouse Rail hub. They have not yet announced a construction budget or a detailed building programme. Location decided, chequebook unopened.
The decision anchors regeneration of Bradford's Southern Gateway, a 126-hectare area with capacity for 5,000 homes and 440,000 sq m of offices, plus shops, leisure facilities and green spaces.
What happens next on the engineering?
Network Rail has been running engineering and cost studies. Amey has separately secured the integration role across the six projects making up NPR's first phase, including the Bradford to Leeds corridor — engineering coordination, not construction.
Bradford wants a through station, ending the ritual of trains reversing out of the existing terminus. The final layout, platform numbers and track arrangements remain unsettled.
Wider rail plans include:
- Electrifying the Bradford to Leeds route via New Pudsey
- Developing a future fast connection to Huddersfield and onwards to Manchester
- Linking the new station with the proposed West Yorkshire mass transit network
Who is planning the regeneration?
Arup is progressing the regeneration masterplan for Bradford Council, building on earlier work by WSP. The scheme aims to unlock land for thousands of homes and new commercial space.
Transport secretary Heidi Alexander said: "By bringing Northern Powerhouse Rail into the heart of the city, we are unlocking the huge potential Bradford offers – improving connections, supporting economic growth and setting the foundations for new homes, jobs and opportunities across the region."
West Yorkshire mayor Tracy Brabin called it "an exciting and important milestone for Bradford, with an ironclad commitment to a new station in the city centre."
Ironclad, presumably, pending the budget.
How much money is on the table?
The wider NPR programme carries a £45bn lifetime funding cap, with £1.1bn allocated for development during the current spending review period. None of that is yet earmarked as a Bradford station construction figure.
For now, the industry's near-term work is studies and coordination. The concrete arrives some time in the 2030s, assuming the programme and its funding hold — a sentence that has ended many a rail ambition before.
