Apple has released a seven-inch screen called HomeView, a single device that consolidates its home-management software and app functions into one wall- or table-mounted dashboard. It's a control panel for the house, essentially. Apple would prefer you call it decor.
The display gives physical form to the Apple Home app, released in 2022 to manage smart locks, appliances, cameras and thermostats. Until now that software lived on your phone. Now it lives on the kitchen counter.
What exactly is HomeView?
Two versions exist. One stands on a base with an integrated speaker; the other mounts flat on a wall. Both run the familiar Apple touchscreen grammar: home screen, apps, widgets, a front-facing camera and FaceTime video calling.
The tabletop model has a case and a thick base made from recycled aluminium, with a rounded base and a movable screen that echoes the 2002 iMac G4 desktop. Apple clearly knows which ghost to summon. Four finishes are on offer: silver, starlight, rose pink and space grey.
The company also pitched the object's domestic credentials, calling it "the perfect addition to a kitchen counter, nightstand, or side table."
How does it handle multiple users?
Face recognition covers up to six people per device, each with personalised settings. That inverts the usual model, where the app sits on personalised devices and the household shares nothing but a Wi-Fi password.
An intercom system connects multiple HomeView units within one household. Yelling up the stairs, presumably, becomes optional.
What is Siri AI?
The device ships with Apple's next-generation assistant. "HomeView features Siri AI, an entirely new version of Siri powered by the next generation of Apple Intelligence and advanced Apple silicon," said Apple.
The company added: "Siri AI is a profoundly more capable and conversational assistant with personal context understanding and onscreen awareness." Onscreen awareness means the assistant can see what's on the display and respond accordingly — a step beyond the pocket Siri most users have learned to tolerate.
The release also brought updated home products, including cameras, locks and thermostats, deepening the ecosystem that HomeView is designed to command.
Where does this fit in Apple's year?
HomeView follows a busy stretch for the company, which in September released its first foldable smartphone, described as the size of a passport. The dashboard extends the same logic indoors: more surfaces, more Apple silicon, fewer reasons to leave the operating system.
With a recognisable design lineage, six-user recognition and a rebuilt assistant, HomeView signals that Apple intends to compete for the household hub, not just the pocket.
