genarchitects has completed a 1,046 m² community regeneration at Youyi Bay, a micro-community in Aranya, Qinhuangdao, that mixes a hotel, apartments and commercial spaces. The project, finished in 2025, reworks the enclave's public realm rather than its buildings. Photography is by Shengliang Su.
The Shanghai firm frames the work under a simple motto: "Growing Through Use." It's a bet that shared space, not square footage, is what makes a small community hold together.
What was already there?
The original design organized Youyi Bay's public spaces around a group of plazas. The hotel and apartments enclosed their own courtyards, while the buildings framed plazas of different sizes and atmospheres.
That layering produced a deliberate gradient. According to the architects, "Moving through them, people experienced a gradual shift from lively to quiet, and from public to private." The 2025 regeneration builds on that found logic instead of erasing it.
What does the regeneration change?
In practical terms, it tunes the transitions. The plaza system stays the backbone of the plan, and the gradient from social to secluded remains the organizing principle. The upgrade concentrates on making those in-between spaces work harder for daily use by hotel guests, residents and visitors alike.
The material palette is specific and named: manufacturers Houxiang, OIKOS and Rilang supplied components for the build. OIKOS is known for doors and entrances; the firms' involvement signals an emphasis on durable, touchable surfaces in a coastal environment.
Why it matters
Aranya has become a testbed for low-rise, community-first development on China's Bohai coast, and Youyi Bay shows how regeneration there is shifting from icon-building to the quieter craft of tuning circulation and courtyard life. At 1,046 m², the project is small, but its premise, that a community grows through use rather than through a master plan alone, is a scalable one for other micro-communities facing the same question.
