Key takeaways
- The TUFF Pencil Cabinet was designed by Shushana Khachatrian, founder and design director of STUDIO SHOO.
- The cabinet comes in two versions: a yellow single-tier model with a top-opening drawer and a pink two-tier model with a top-opening and a pull-out drawer.
- The design references the pink volcanic tuff stone that defines Yerevan's architectural identity, plus chalk drawings and motifs on its porous surfaces.
- Both versions are fitted with wheels for moving between spaces.
- The upper drawer of the pink model can function as an occasional coffee table.
STUDIO SHOO has built a pencil cabinet out of pink volcanic tuff — or rather, out of the idea of it. The TUFF Pencil Cabinet, designed by founder and design director Shushana Khachatrian, borrows its palette from the pink tuff stone that defines Yerevan's architectural identity. A whole city's geology, condensed into a drawer unit you can push across the room.
The reference goes deeper than color. The design also draws on chalk drawings, handwritten names, and simple motifs often found on the porous surfaces of the stone, translating Yerevan's built heritage and everyday street culture into mobile storage for creative tools.
What do the two versions offer?
The cabinet comes in two colorways, each with a different configuration:
- Yellow: a single tier with a top-opening drawer
- Pink: two tiers, combining a top-opening drawer with a pull-out lower drawer
The pink model works harder. Its upper drawer can also serve as an occasional coffee table, which is the sort of dual-purpose modesty that small-apartment dwellers will recognize immediately.
How mobile is it?
Both versions sit on wheels, letting them move between spaces and adapt to different activities. The cabinet pairs its compact form and adaptable storage with that transportable base, so the object follows the work rather than the other way around.
Through its color palette, compact form, and wheeled adaptability, the TUFF Pencil Cabinet connects a reference to Yerevan's built environment with the practical needs of everyday creative work. Whether the pink drawer actually reads as tuff to anyone outside Armenia is a fairer question than the studio would probably like — but the intent, and the utility, are both legible.
The project arrives via designboom's DIY submissions feature, where readers submit their own work for publication. It's a small object carrying a large reference, and it suggests Khachatrian's studio will keep mining local stone culture for furniture-scale translations.
